API deprecation for AI models: what breaks when a model is retired

API deprecation used to mean an endpoint would change shape. For AI models it means the thing that answers your requests stops existing. OpenAI's deprecations page lists about fifty model snapshots with a shutdown date between September 24 and December 11, 2026, GPT-4 among them. Anthropic retired nine Claude models in twelve months. This is how model deprecation works under the hood: the lifecycle, what breaks in your code on the morning after, what "weights preservation" actually preserves, an...

But when you are first starting out or even when you've been in the industry for years there is this quiet hesitation every time you hit launch on an expensive service. You want to experiment, you want to build wild architectures, and you want to push your skills to the absolute limit. But in the back of your mind, there is always that nagging fear: What if I misconfigure something? ...

Level Up Your Salary: A Jedi's Guide to Negotiating as a Software Engineer

The Quest Begins (The "Why") I still remember the first time I got a job offer after months of leetcode grinding. The recruiter slid over a PDF with a number that felt… okay, but not great. I was excited to finally have a foot in the door, yet a tiny voice whispered, “You could be leaving money on the table.” I’d heard the horror stories of engineers accepting the first number and regretting it months later when they saw a peer with similar experience pulling in $20k more. That feeling—like ...

The Small Server Mistakes That Can Cause Big Problems

Hello, I’m Arthur. I want to share something I learned while working with websites and applications. When something breaks on a server, we usually look for a big reason. A server crashed. The application has too much traffic. The database is overloaded. But sometimes the problem starts with something very small. A forgotten process. A full disk. An old log file. A wrong cron job. These little things can slowly turn into bigger problems. A Full Disk Can B...

Fine Print: an agent that knows when the FAQ and the Official Rules disagree

This is a submission for the Sanity Challenge, Path One: Ship an Agent That Queries Real Content What I Built Fine Print reads contest rules so you don't miss the clause that disqualifies you. I enter a lot of hackathons and bounties. The rules for one contest are never on one page. There's a landing page, an FAQ, a contest-rules page, and the platform's general Official Rules, and they drift apart. This very challenge is a good example. Its own pages disagree in ways tha...

Why n8n Workflows Drop Idealista Data When Runs Exceed 300 Seconds

Why n8n Workflows Drop Idealista Data When Runs Exceed 300 Seconds When orchestrating web scrapers inside a production data pipeline, developers often default to synchronous webhook patterns. You configure an HTTP request node in n8n, point it to the Apify API run-sync endpoint, and wait for the payload to return. This simple pattern breaks down when scraping real estate listings from platforms like Idealista. The idealista-scraper is designed to handle pagination, mirror-first routing,...

Chamath says open AI models are "commoditize your complement." Agree?

Chamath's argument (https://research.socialcapital.com/p/open-vs-closed): companies give away the thing they dont sell for free, so the thing they do sell is worth more. Meta makes money though ads, Google and Microsoft from cloud. The losers are companies whose business is selling access to closed models. But still companies are paying more and mroe for closed models anyway! Does this theory hold up? Comments URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49942208 Points: 1 # Comments: 1
