The Work Behind β€œRecommended for You”

My journey into recommendation systems started with curiosity: how do large companies decide what to recommend to each user? While exploring their approaches, I wanted to understand how similar ideas could be applied to associations and their members. Exploring the approaches I started by learning about the different ways recommendations can be generated: Content-based filtering : Suggest items based on their similarity to a person’s interests or previous choices. Coll...

Build a Truth Table Generator in Python (Parser, Evaluator, Tautology Checker)

Truth tables show up in discrete math, digital logic, and philosophy courses, and they're tedious by hand. A 4-variable expression means 16 rows, and one slipped F ruins the whole table. This is a good small project for developers: a tokenizer, a recursive descent parser, and an evaluator, in under 150 lines of Python with no dependencies. I'll walk through how it works and link a free web version at the end. The plan Given an input like ~(A & B) <-> (~A | ...

CodeSmith:Like Jev A -Harness for Cheap Brains

Prologue: Like Jev β€” A Harness for Cheap Brains Source version of CodeSmith : v0.5.0 (commit 3a74c82f ). All paths are relative to the repo root; line numbers refer to this version. Intended audience: anyone who has used a coding agent and wondered what parts a harness is actually assembled from. Series index: README . Start with a piece of code. This is filtering logic from the CodeSmith engine, the kind that runs while it streams and decodes model output β€” my favorite stretch...

Retrieval Isn't Enough β€” I Built a Claim Relationship Resolver

Claim Relationship Resolver This is a submission for the Sanity Challenge, Path One: Ship an Agent That Queries Real Content . What I Built I built a Claim Relationship Resolver , a deterministic, pure-Python agent using only the standard library and no LLM API. It answers questions from structured claims stored in Sanity, but instead of simply retrieving a matching document, it determines how the retrieved claims relate to each other before producing an answer. The agent...

Your AI guardrail is green. It's also catching nothing.

There are three ways a security guardrail can fail you. Two of them are loud. One of them is a serial killer. It's down. Crashed, misconfigured, not deployed. You find out fast β€” errors, alerts, a red dashboard, an on-call page at 3am. Painful, but honest. It's weak. It runs, it catches some attacks, it misses others. You can measure it, argue about it, improve it. Also honest. It's running perfectly, passing every health check, returning valid scores on every request β€” and c...

Make your first 3D asset in the browser, then customize it through MCP

Sceneplane now has a browser-first way to make a small 3D project. You can try it before connecting an agent or editing any configuration files. I'm posting from the Sceneplane maker account. The platform runs Blender in the cloud and exposes editing, inspection, rendering and exports through MCP. The new browser starters use that same project and job pipeline. Create your first asset Sign up or sign in . Choose Ceramic planter , Game prop , or 20 mm scale model . C...

Python Virtual Environments: What They Are and Why You Need Them

πŸ“Œ Quick Info Topic: Virtual environments in Python Target Audience: Beginners who've installed packages with pip and hit problems Goal: Understand why virtual environments exist and how to use one 1. Introduction "For my first two weeks of Python, I installed every package globally. Then I had two projects that needed two different versions of the same library β€” and everything broke. That's when I learned about virtual environments." 2. ...

OpenBSD's ports tree keeps GPL coreutils and rejects uutils (Rust rewrite)

A contributor proposed a new OpenBSD port for uutils, the Rust reimplementations of GNU coreutils. The proposal met firm resistance: Stuart Henderson called it unusable, explaining that GNU coreutils exists mainly to stabilize GNU-sensitive build environments. Theo de Raadt went further arguing that nobody wants subtly differently-behaving utilities in their pipelines and that ports developers would be stuck maintaining the result. Comments

Ask HN: How do you handle hitting AI coding agent usage limits?

One topic I've been researching lately is the best way to handle switching to another agent when I hit a usage limit on one of them. For example, if I hit the usage limit on Codex, I would want to switch to Claude Code and vice versa. The important part is not losing the ongoing context/task(s) when switching between the tools.. I have found a few things that say they do this but none seem to have much traction. As a result, I was hoping to pick the brain of HN'ers to see how you all handle this...
