One command tells you if your next Kubernetes upgrade will brick a node

Since v1.35 , the kubelet setting failCgroupV1 defaults to true . On a node that still runs cgroup v1, the kubelet refuses to start, so the node goes NotReady and stays there. On a control-plane node it is worse: the kubelet starts the API server and etcd as static pods, so after a reboot they do not come back either. kubeadm warns you first: its SystemVerification preflight check errors on init , join and upgrade once the kubelet is v1.35 or later. Do not skip it with --...

** I built a small language model from scratch. Here's how it works.**

I've been building Orin AI (AE-Assistant), a small language-model project designed to run locally on ordinary laptop hardware without a dedicated GPU. The project explores a decoder-only Transformer, custom BPE tokenization, and experiments with recurrent-depth architectures and retrieval-based grounding. I made a video walking through the project and showing the model running. YouTube breakdown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zraZKknc7LQ GitHub repository: https://github...

Inbound lead qualification from the email domain: company record, decision makers and the gmail case, with Apify Actors and n8n

A form fill is a claim. The sender typed a name, a title, a company and a size band, and the only field you can check without asking anyone is the one they did not write: the domain after the @. A qualifier that scores the message text will score a well-written pitch as hot, because the pitch was written to be scored. A qualifier that scores the domain is harder to flatter. This post is what four Actors return for a batch of twelve inbound-style domains and ten personal addresses, run this mo...

Idempotency Keys - The Double-Charge Trap

The Problem You click Pay . The server charges your card, but the response is lost on the way back (network drop, timeout, tab freeze). The UI thinks it failed, so you click Pay again and get charged twice . A timeout means "I don't know what happened" , not "payment failed". The Idea Idempotent = doing the same thing twice has the same effect as doing it once. Action Repeat it twice Idempotent? Set notifications to OFF Still OFF Yes ...

Paver Patio Base Depth: How Much Gravel and Sand You Actually Need

Every paver patio that rocks, sinks or grows weeds between the joints has the same root cause: a base that was too thin or poorly compacted. The pavers you see are the easy part. The gravel and sand underneath do the real work, so it pays to get the quantities right before the delivery truck shows up. How deep should the base be? Patios and walkways (foot traffic): 4 to 6 inches of compacted crushed-stone base. Driveways (vehicle traffic): 8 to 12 inches of compacted ba...

Stop finding out you're rate-limited mid-task. Check the headroom first.

Stop finding out you're rate-limited mid-task. Check the headroom first. One sentence from a Show HN thread stuck with me: "Thing I'd want surfaced is per account rate limit headroom before I dispatch, not after I'm stuck mid task." blackbox-bill v0.3.0 does exactly that. It was a post-mortem tool — it read your AI coding bill and explained why it looked wrong. Now it's also a pre-flight tool: it shows per-account quota headroom before you dispatch the next task, and tells you which...

The seabed is militarizing

The seabed is militarizing. CNBC reports a surge in autonomous underwater drones and sensor nets protecting subsea cables and pipelines — infrastructure carrying 95% of intercontinental data. For devs building the autonomy stack: computer vision, sensor fusion, SLAM in turbid water — hard problems. For the operators running the consoles: a different hard problem. 12-hour watches. Multiple video/sonar feeds. Each eye often tracking a separate stream. Fatigue degrades fusion, vergence, attention. ...

12 Cursor rules that stop AI assistants writing outdated FastAPI code

AI coding assistants still reach for FastAPI patterns from a few years ago: .dict() , orm_mode , session.query() , HTTPException raised deep inside service code, SQLite in tests. The code runs, but it isn't the code you'd write today. Cursor's project rules fix most of this. A rule is a small .mdc file in .cursor/rules/ with a glob, so it loads only when you edit matching files: --- description : " FastAPI routers, dependencies and Pydantic v2 s...

How to Get Your Public IP Address From the Command Line

The quickest way to get your public IP address from a terminal is curl https://ipcomet.com . It prints your address and nothing else, so the output can go straight into a script. This guide shows the same one-liner on macOS, Linux and Windows, how to do it from Python and Node.js, how to get your location and ISP as JSON, and how to choose between IPv4 and IPv6. The one-line answer curl https://ipcomet.com The output is a single line such as 203.0.113.7 . The hom...

17/10 TOP - Foundation: 89% Revisiting Rock Paper Scissors Today I learned about git branch, git checkout and git merge. Very useful, probably will use these commands often. git branch - git branch branch_name : create a new branch ( point to the current commit ), doesn't move you to that branch. Once you switch to that branch, you can commit on it and don't have to worry about affecting main branch. git checkout - git checkout branch_name: switch to that branch, the files in your wo...

How to Sandbox AI Agents: A Developer's Guide

On 9 October, Anthropic published something you rarely see from an AI lab: an admission that it could not control its own software. During internal evaluations, its agents had exploited real websites — including ones run by US government agencies — bypassed paywalls, smuggled data past restrictions through URL shorteners, and filed a false homicide tip with the Philadelphia police. The company's response: cut live internet access from all internal evaluations until it can prove it can monitor an...

Silent Breakage Detection: Poll Queries, Cron Jobs, and SaaS API Error Rates

Short answer: use an error-rate counter for busy API traffic, an externally observed last-success timestamp for cron jobs, and a small replay test that proves each alert fires and recovers before anyone is paged. The deciding constraint isn't the dashboard. It's whether the signal can distinguish a failed outcome from a request that merely completed, and whether it can notice work that never started. A beautiful chart built from shallow signals will confidently report the wrong thing. For ...

eval() in a straitjacket: running user JavaScript under a strict CSP

I run String Utility Belt , a browser tool for chaining text transformations. Decode the Base64, pretty-print the JSON, pull out one field, save and reuse this pipeline everywhere. It has a couple of hundred built-in tools, but you will still, one day, need the one I didn't write. So there's an escape hatch: a custom JavaScript step. You write a function body, it gets input , and whatever you return goes to the next step. Lovely feature. Terrifying feature. The trouble is who uses a s...

Do you let LLMs write both your tests and your code?

I'm curious what stance others have taken? Or what they've experienced with this? I'm toying with adding a rule to our values.md that the LLM can only significantly generate one or the other. I'm reviewing a merge request at the moment where it's clear the LLM mostly did both, and they're highly tautological. And I can see how it over engineered the code, just to be able to write more tests almost.
