I'm a terrible designer, a worse writer, and can't edit video to save my life. Here's how I finally built something that worked anyway

I'm 36. Most of my friends own apps or ecommerce stores, and for as long as I can remember I wanted to be like them. Or at least pull in some real money from something digital instead of staying salaried forever. So I tried. A lot. Over the years I had 4 ecommerce sites, one Amazon FBA, 3 apps, and I put out 2 Amazon KDP books. Most of it worked, technically. It just barely worked. A few hundred bucks here and there, and three of them flopped completely. The worst part wasn't even the money....

Built a reading platform that keeps AI, notes, and vocabulary in one place

Been working on a side project called Folio. https://foliolib.xyz It's basically an AI-powered reading platform where you can read books, ask AI to explain difficult passages, highlight and annotate text, save unfamiliar words, and then practice them with quizzes - all without leaving the book. I mainly built it because I got tired of jumping between my PDF, a dictionary, ChatGPT, and my notes every few minutes. It's still a work in progress, so I'd really appreciate any feedback - goo...

I built an IOS app that helps me instantly find content I saved for later TikTok, Instagram, Reddit and everywhere else

During my daily life, I save a lot of content across many different apps to view later, whether that be workout form tips, recipe's to try later, tutorials, investing tips, styling tips etc. Instead of franticly searching through multiple different apps saved collections, bookmarks and random notes the moment I actually need something to find what i'm looking for. I built ClipRack to make finding things much easier. One of the original reason for the app's creation was a situation I would ru...

ShareClean: a local-first CLI to redact sensitive info from logs before sharing

Hi r/commandline , I’m the creator of ShareClean. It’s a small Python CLI for cleaning logs, stack traces, config snippets, and terminal output before pasting them into GitHub issues, support tickets, Slack, support threads, or other public places. ShareClean is meant to be a quick local safety pass before sharing text publicly. Example: cat app.log | shareclean --report Input: user=user@example.com password=fake-secret-value postgresql://app:fake-pass@db.example.com/app ...

Made a cover letter generator that actually reads the job description (not just swaps in the company name)

Most of the AI cover letter tools i've seen/used just have a template with COMPANY_NAME and JOB_TITLE slots. They output identical slop no matter what job you apply for. I made LetterFlow to be different. It reads your actual CV and the actual job description together and produces something that's specific to both. It's £2.99 per letter or £7.99/month unlimited. I'm from the UK so it's UK English throughout. https://letterflow-ruddy.vercel.app

I kept spoiling books by checking fan wikis, so I’m building this

I read a lot of long fantasy/sci-fi series, and whenever I take a break, I forget characters, factions, places, and old plot threads. The problem: when I search a character on a wiki, I usually get spoiled instantly. So I’m building LoreKeeper — a spoiler-aware e-reader + AI companion that only answers based on what you’ve already read. The goal is simple: remember characters and locations get recaps without future spoilers ask “who is this again?” without ruining the next chapte...

Can you break my Android gym notes app? Best report gets lifetime access

I’m the solo dev of Fi7Note, an Android gym notes tracker. The app is built around one core idea: write workouts like quick gym notes → review what the app recognized → save them as structured workout history → get progress, previous weights, PRs, muscle views and recovery data later I’ve added a lot recently, including Share Studio, body/muscle heatmaps, recovery charts, bodyweight/reps-only tracking and powerlifting-style entries. But before I work on the next features, I want to...

I spent 3 years building an Auth0 alternative as a solo developer

I've been working on a project called BlitzWare for the past tree years (on and off) alongside my studies, and it's finally at a point where I'm comfortable showing it to other developers. The idea started because I was building small applications that I wanted to protect, but I never felt confident implementing authentication properly. At the same time, every solution I looked at had trade-offs I wasn't happy with; some became very expensive as projects grew, some were difficult to customize,...

My friend has worked on BBC documentaries, so we built a course to teach cinematic storytelling using just your phone (storystudents.com)

Hello - stumbled across this subreddit and felt like it’d be a welcoming community to take a look at our project. My friend Almu is awesome…she’s spent her career as producer-director on many BBC documentaries - and it’s taken her to many places - from meeting tribes in the Amazon forest to learning more about drug cartels. But because she’s been behind the camera her sincerity has been hidden from the world - and I’m trying to change that. She wants more people to become documentary fi...

I built my perfect version of a pro camera app

Hey guys, I want to share an idea I've had in my head for almost 10 years and finally got the opportunity to build it. The native camera app on iOS is good, but it's designed for the average user. Professional photographers want more control, formats, etc. I built an app that puts DSLR type controls at reach. I started this project back in November mostly using cursor + various models. After the release of Opus, I mostly used that and some codex when Opus would struggle with certain tasks. T...

I built a Telegram bot that filters good .com domains right after they drop

Good .com domains are hard to get, the short brandable ones went years ago, and the few for sale go for thousands at auction. But most of .com sits unused. A crawl of the whole .com zone found only about a third of registered names have a real website. The rest are parked, on for-sale pages, or empty. A lot of it is squatters. Those names don’t stay locked up forever, though. Tens of thousands of .com domains drop every day, often abandoned squatter inventory or a project someone walked away...

Devastated that my project just lost all (two) of my clients (universities), getting out-priced. After talking to friends/network, I'm getting the opinion that I can sell my project/company for an exit, and that this is common. What are your experiences with your project exits?

Context of the project It is a multi-year software project (started well before LLMs), essentially as extension/plug-in/tool for LMS or learning management systems like Blackboard/Canvas. It is a teaching-assistant, where students can study/learn faster, and instructors can see data e.g. where students are confused the most. Both Blackboard and Canvas also started to offer similar functions for free, but only about 50% or less of the functions that my project provides, though % of use-time f...

I built a calm daily Stoic app — one passage on your Lock Screen, then nothing

I'm a solo dev (7 years in), and I kept wanting one small thing: a single Stoic passage on my Lock Screen each morning, with nothing else attached — no feed, no streaks, no notification begging to be cleared. Nothing like that existed the way I wanted, so I built it. It's called Dawnstone. One passage a day from Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, or Epictetus, gently modernized from public-domain translations (with the original text a tap away). The Lock Screen wallpaper is free — no ads, no account. ...

most of my X posts went nowhere until i worked out the pattern. ended up building a tool around it
