California tightens rules on AI data center energy and water use
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed seven bills designed to prevent AI data centers from passing utility costs onto residents, as reported earlier by the Los Angeles Times. The package of laws requires the California Public Utilities Commission to introduce a new rate classification for data centers while forcing them to pay for upgrades to […]

Amazon wants to help the Colorado River, but we still don’t know how much water the company uses
Amazon plans to spend $20 million on water conservation projects along the Colorado River, a crucial but dwindling water supply for 40 million people in the Western US. The initiative comes as Amazon and other tech companies face mounting scrutiny over how much water their data centers use. Amazon has a goal of becoming water […]

A cut cable disrupted hundreds of flights across the US
Hundreds of flights were cancelled or delayed on Monday after construction crews in New Jersey accidentally cut a Verizon fiber cable used for air traffic control. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said that a circuit failure led to the discovery of the severed fiber cable, ABC News reports. The outage hammered airports across the Northeast, causing […]

Keeping Large JSON Smooth: Update Only What Changed
Almost any implementation feels smooth when the JSON is small. The real challenge starts with large data: a real API response may contain deeply nested objects, long arrays, and many repeated structures. At that point, simply panning the canvas, editing one field, or switching between two documents can freeze the page.
While building Treease to work with 50 MB documents, I made a series of optimizations. This article collects the lessons behind them. It focuses on what to compute, read, an...

Your First Factory: GtkListView and the Bind/Unbind Rhythm
This is the fourth entry in A Field Guide to GTK Widgets — a series about which widget to reach for, when, and what bites you when you do. The previous post got a list on screen with a factory it deliberately didn't explain. This one explains it. The complete, runnable code lives in the companion repo .
Where we left off
The list-mindset post got a GtkListView on screen with just enough factory code to prove the model-driven approach worked, and it said so directly: s...

Prioritizing zero-day patching when you cannot patch everything
The Imperative of Selective Patching in a Zero-Day Landscape
The ideal state of cybersecurity is one where every vulnerability is identified, assessed, and patched within hours of discovery. In this theoretical perfect world, the attack surface remains static and minimal. However, reality presents a far more complex picture for security practitioners. The sheer volume of vulnerabilities disclosed daily, combined with resource constraints, legacy system dependencies, and the risk of patch-ind...

How I Built CleanDrop: A Safe, Zero-Dependency CLI to Tame Your Downloads Folder
Every developer’s Downloads folder eventually becomes a chaotic digital landfill. Screenshots, random PDF receipts, compressed archives, test datasets, and CLI binaries pile up until finding anything becomes a chore.
Like most engineers, I initially relied on ad-hoc Bash one-liners. But quick scripts have major flaws:
They fail silently or overwrite files when file names collide.
One wrong flag or typo can accidentally move or delete critical files.
There is no rollback mechanism i...

Is everything on here AI generated?
I like the writing editor on dev.to. I use it to just get some thoughts out and one shot into the Internet ether.
As I look around the site however - I can't help but notice that 99% of everything people post on here is straight out of an LLM. We see you. It's very obvious. No one talks (or even writes) like that.
Also - no one is reading your 10 page post. If you can't say it in 3 to 4 paragraphs - maybe you need to rethink your idea. Ain't nobody got time for that.

How I Built HashDup: A Fast, Memory-Safe Duplicate File Finder CLI in Node.js
Over time, every workstation accumulates duplicate files: duplicated photo backups, repeated downloads of large zip archives, cloned repositories, and redundant ISOs. They quietly eat gigabytes of expensive SSD storage.
Most people write a simple script that reads all files and compares their hashes. But on large drives, that naive approach has two fatal problems:
Performance bottleneck: Hashing thousands of files wastes CPU and disk I/O when 90% of files have unique sizes and can nev...

Gemini Notebook Expands Its Workspace, but Artifact Organization Is Still Undocumented

Even if you delete the commit or force-push, git history scanners and malicious scrapers detect leaked credentials within seconds of hitting GitHub. Once an API key is leaked, it must be rotated immediately.

rekuiper 0.500: Moving the Engine Hot Path to RAM and Finding its Exact Physical Limits (up to 200k msg/s)
When we published our earlier benchmarks for rekuiper (our Rust reimplementation of LF Edge eKuiper for edge gateways and IoT hubs), the numbers answered our first question: on five real-world MQTT workloads, memory stayed bounded between 5 and 10 MB while Go-based engines climbed to hundreds of megabytes or failed.
In that test, rekuiper sustained 100,000 messages per second on a single pinned core . At offered 200,000 msg/s, however, it dropped packets or backlogged upstream.
