Every DOE 202(c) emergency order of 2025-2026 in one CSV: 66 this year, and emergency orders in force on 76 days
The U.S. Department of Energy can order a utility or grid operator to keep running generation under section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act. DOE lists those orders on its website as text. I put every order, extension and amendment from DOE's 2025 and 2026 pages into one CSV (85 rows), with a small standard-library Python script whose tests check the counts against the table.
What the table shows, as of 18 October 2026:
66 orders, extensions and amendments in 2026 so far , against 19 in...

Design a CDN: the content delivery network system design walkthrough
The request to design a CDN sounds like a one-liner — put the files closer to the users — and that one line hides the whole interview. A content delivery network system design is not a file server with extra machines; it is a globally distributed read-through cache where a request from a phone in Mumbai should be answered by a server a few milliseconds away instead of crossing an ocean to your origin, and where the ha...

VoiceLedger: Turn a 20-Second Voice Note into a GST Invoice Using Open-Weight Gemma and MongoDB Atlas
This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 2: Side Hustle
What I Built
Independent contractors in India—plumbers, electricians, freelance event photographers, mechanics, and home bakers—spend their entire day doing hands-on work. The last thing they want to do at 9:00 PM is sit at a desk, open a spreadsheet, look up HSN/SAC tax codes, separate material costs from labor charges, calculate CGST/SGST splits, and format a PDF bill. Because of this fri...

PSEC-99: A 3D Browser Game in C# and WASM, Without WebGL
Take a look at what the OpenSilver team has built. This game shows what C# and WebAssembly can do in the browser. How fast? Play it and see for yourself.
Disclosure: I used to work with this team, so I know what they’re capable of.
For those who don't know, OpenSilver was born long ago as a replacement for Silverlight, a kind of competitor to Flash (but way better). But, as usual, Microsoft killed it. Classic: from "this is the future" to "nah, HTML5 and React are the future." It compile...

RepoTrace — Make failing commands repeatable, inspectable, and testable
Why it matters
When a command fails in your project or CI, “it failed” is rarely enough to act on. RepoTrace saves the exact argv, exit code, stdout/stderr, working directory, and interpreter metadata so a failure becomes a replayable artifact — a single-file, JSON bug report that you can rerun, render as Markdown, or convert into a standalone pytest regression test. That preserves the signal of the original failure and turns debugging into a repeatable, auditable process.
What RepoTrace i...

Design a failure test from what the user must never see
I make Just Every, a set of free, open-source alternatives to subscription work software, so I spend a lot of time deciding what a test should check. Nothing in the method below needs our code. A worked example from one of our products is at the end.
Most test suites are organised around what the code does. I find a failure test easier to design from the other end: start with the wrong thing a user could see on screen.
Here's an exercise for it. Run it on a throwaway environment with test ...

Design a web search engine: the system design interview walkthrough
Design a web search engine: the system design interview walkthrough
The request to design a web search engine sounds impossibly large — "build Google" — and that size is exactly the trap. The sentence hides three separate systems: a crawler that discovers pages, an indexer that turns them into something searchable, and a serving layer that answers a query in the blink of an eye. A strong candidate says that out loud in the first minute, scopes the crawler to its own problem, and name...

How to Never Manually Obfuscate a .NET Assembly Again (Visual Studio CLI Guide)
If you are still opening a desktop GUI, hunting for your release DLL, and clicking an "Obfuscate" button every time you want to publish a C# or VB.NET application, you are leaving your CI/CD pipeline vulnerable to simple human error.
In my day-to-day work as a Senior Software Developer building tools at Rustemsoft, I constantly see teams accidentally ship unprotected intermediate language (IL) simply because someone forgot a manual step. When we designed Opaquer .NET Obfuscator as the success...

Your Baseline Profile Is Committed, CI Runs It, and It's Still Doing Nothing
Your baseline-prof.txt is committed, CI runs the generator task every release, and the dashboard shows a nice fat profile file in the APK. Cold start is still slow. Here's the thing almost nobody checks: a baseline profile can be present, committed, and completely inert — and your build will never tell you.
The three ways a baseline profile silently no-ops

Designing AI Notes You Can Actually Study From
An AI note-taking interface can produce a summary, ten flashcards, and a quiz from one document. That leaves a product question: what should someone do with each of those outputs?
A useful design gives each format a clear job, lets people check its claims, and keeps mistakes from spreading across the whole note.
Here is a small design walkthrough using an invented specification. It is an illustration, not a report of a deployed product or a user study.

BBC Master Pi 1MHz Domesday
Dominic Plunkett has updated the BBC Micro PiMHz software to emulate most of the hardware for a BBC AIV system, including the LV player! Just add a trackball/mouse and a PiTubeDirect and you'll be able to run the Domesday disc!
This video covers how the PiMHz implementation works (basically!), how to set it up and gives a demo of the Domesday Community and National Discs.

Updates to site guidelines and AI/LLM tags
Hey folks,
I've been having to perform an increasing number of moderation actions surrounding the vibecoding tag and AI/LLM related content. I started reading Lobsters because it had the most interesting viewpoints related to computing. During that time, I've found that this community is at it's best when it's trying to, in good faith, help others grow. In lieu of a larger and more rambling discussion on this point, we would like to try two changes encourage that behavior again and re-focu...
