Month-over-Month Growth in SQL: LAG, the Growth Formula, and the Traps

By Michael Nocito , data analyst · Published August 7, 2026 By the end of this page you can write a month-over-month growth query and trust its answer. You will know the growth formula and how to say it in a sentence, what LAG() actually does, and the three traps that produce wrong percentages without producing an error: integer division, the empty first month, and the missing month. It is about twenty minutes. Here is what to actually do today. Before you trust any growth query you hav...

NULL in SQL: Why = NULL Finds Nothing and What to Write Instead

By Michael Nocito , data analyst · Published August 7, 2026 By the end of this page you can predict what any query does when it meets a missing value, which is the skill that separates "my query returned nothing and I don't know why" from a two-second fix. You will know why = NULL matches zero rows, why one NULL can empty an entire NOT IN , and how NULLs quietly move averages, counts, groups, and sort orders. It is about twenty minutes. Here is what to actually do with it. Next time a ...

Which SQL Database Should You Install?

By Michael Nocito , data analyst · Published August 7, 2026 If you want to write SQL against your own data today, install a file-based engine: SQLite if you are learning, DuckDB if your data is already in CSV files. Both give you the whole SQL language. Neither has a server to start, a port to open, or a password to set. Install a server such as PostgreSQL, MySQL or SQL Server when, and only when, more than one person or program needs to read and write the same data at the same time. ...

Hello world, it's Wednesday, August 19, 2026, and here's what happened This Week in PHP Internals. 12 stories this week, so let's get into it. But first, Is AI working for your team? Ballast answers that for free . It reads your git history — never your code — and gives you 2 numbers every month. Stable velocity tells you how much of what you ship survives. A durability score from 300 to 850 tells you whether it holds up. ballast.now . This week's top story: a 5-argument function propo...

overflow: clip saved my navbar

This is a submission for DEV's Summer Bug Smash: Smash Stories powered by Sentry . There was no error in the console, the CSS was syntactically correct, the logic was sound, and overflow: hidden was just not working. I was building the navigation overlay for my personal portfolio, which runs on Next.js 15 with App Router, React 19 and Tailwind v4. The navbar opens a fullscreen overlay that descends from the top using GSAP. Inside that overlay, each navigation link has a split reveal ...

Nuance Is a Double-Edged Sword ⚔️

The dictionary defines nuance as a subtle distinction or variation. In practice, it's the difference between a junior developer who follows the rules and a senior developer who knows when to break them — the gap between having a rule and knowing what the rule is actually for. Which is exactly what got me triggered this week 😋 — a few posts crossed my feed carrying words like never , died , stated flat, no room left for a counterexample to breathe. Hope that's okay to say out loud. Be...

We built a benchmark, then caught it strangling the models it was grading

A couple of day ago I posted about OmnisBench, our open benchmark for LLM routing, specifically our LLM Router OmnisRouter , and made a fuss about how you can re-grade every number yourself because we publish the actual model responses. Two commenters, deanlee and jugeni, very politely pointed out that the whole thing might be resting on a fib. Their point: HumanEval and GSM8K are old. The models have almost certainly read the answers. So when I cheerfully reported that the cheapest model a...

Running the blog's content autopilot on a Claude subscription, not API credit

Ahnii! https://jonesrussell.github.io/blog/content-autopilot/ covers how this blog's Content Autopilot workflow mines, curates, and publishes without a human reading the draft first. Three things broke or needed hardening after that pipeline went live: how it pays for Claude, why the auth silently died, and the two gates bolted on afterward to catch a bad draft before it ships. Switching off pay-per-token API credit The produce step originally authenticated with ANTHROPIC...

Show HN: OzBrain, a shared brain for knowledge between agents and your team

I think agent-first chat interfaces will be a primary software modality and busy dashboard/UI will go away. I’m not sure who exactly wins it, but I want my knowledge to grow/go with me. A lot of the “knowledge” ie research, analysis, reasoning will be done by agents as the primary user. Our current notes tools & tasks management systems were built for humans… I don’t care what the 17th thing on my bug backlog is. I want to conduct agents that can execute for me and do great work. What I built Oz...
