Show HN: Shoehorn – Quantize any model down to run on your machine

Working on Mac, Linux, and Windows now. I include a simple GUI to find new models and get things built and set up. It is working quite well across a few models for me. The GitHub README and DESIGN.md files go into detail of the how/why and it's working remarkably well so far. https://github.com/notactuallytreyanastasio/shoehorn Comments URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=49346135 Points: 5 # Comments: 2

Apple’s camera-equipped AirPods appear in leaked video

We may have our first glimpse of Apple's rumored camera-equipped AirPods, thanks to a video that MacRumors found in the macOS Tahoe 26.7 Release Candidate. The short video clip features a man - who is wearing the new AirPods - holding up a book with the cover displayed, so that Visual Intelligence can see the […]

ChatGPT is getting a dedicated mode for teens

OpenAI is introducing a dedicated ChatGPT mode for teenagers, combining existing youth safeguards and new safety features under one roof. The launch comes amid mounting public scrutiny over how AI tools affect younger users, as other platforms implement their own age checks and teen-specific protections. ChatGPT for Teens is "an experience designed to help teens […]

Elon Musk made flying even worse so Palantir could profit

On August 6th, the Minneapolis Air Route Traffic Control Center lost radar and communications for around two hours. The outage disrupted more than 1,100 flights across the center's 330,000 square mile, nine-state airspace sector. Two days earlier, on August 4th, President Donald Trump departed the White House inside his Marine One military helicopter. As Federal […]

How I turned my fish tank high tech

When I was a kid, I owned two goldfish that eventually outgrew the size of their tank. At the time, I didn't realize just how much actually goes into having fish and keeping them healthy. I've learned a lot over the past couple of years while keeping nano fish - a group of five celestial […]

Oops! My cat is an iPad kid

Pets, like children, come with the responsibility to keep them happy, healthy, and mentally stimulated - obligations I readily committed to before getting my cat, Trevor. I work from home, so he's never lonely, and play with him using a mountain of toys at every opportunity outside of my working hours. But younger cats can […]

How We Optimized Next.js 15 for 70,000+ High-Res 4K Wallpapers (Without Melting the Edge)

When we set out to build Zenith Walls , we made a promise: we were going to serve pristine, uncompromised 4K and 8K wallpapers — crisp enough for ultra-wide OLED monitors — while keeping the browsing experience buttery smooth on mobile and desktop alike. Then reality hit. We were dealing with a catalog of over 70,000 images sourced across multiple external CDNs and our own Cloudflare R2 object storage. If you've ever thrown hundreds of uncompressed 10MB–25MB images into a Next.js grid wit...

Polyhost: Why I Built a Reference Stack Instead of a Framework

(Early draft - just published in order to appear first in this series) Description A reference stack for hosting multiple websites with Nginx, Squidex, and .NET — not a framework, not a library, just a working example you can understand and own. Every time I set up a new hosted website I found myself doing the same thing: Copying configuration, rewiring environment files, and reconnecting the same five moving parts. It worked, but it was fragile knowledge — living in each ha...

Protecting the IP in a Generative World

A studio found its own back catalogue inside the training data of a public model. Someone had run a handful of its older titles through a detection tool, and the tool reported, with reasonable confidence, that the model had seen them. The legal team moved quickly, because a decades-old library is the company's principal asset and defending it is the job. The engineering team was asked a simpler question and could not answer it. From the studio's own systems, could it prove when each of those wor...

Your AI Agent Restarted Cleanly. Why Did It Run the Job Twice?

A clean process restart is not the same thing as a safe job restart. An agent can recover its queue, reload its state, and report healthy while still replaying a side effect that already happened before the crash. The dangerous gap is usually between “the worker sent the request” and “the durable state store recorded the result.” This article turns that gap into a small, testable protocol. The false promise of exactly once Most agent runtimes can usually provide one of thes...

Designing a Custom Application-Layer Sliding Window Protocol for High-Latency Networks

A few years ago, my team faced a critical engineering challenge. We were managing a remote patient monitoring system where the edge telemetry device ran on Windows CE. In a pristine laboratory setting with low latency, the system was flawless. It continuously streamed vital signs (ECG, SpO2, and heart rate) to a central supervisor monitoring dashboard. However, once deployed into the field—where devices relied on erratic rural broadband, satellite links, or congested cellular towers—the syst...

EU Right to Repair Sets a 2026 Compliance Deadline and 2027 Platform Rollout

The European Union's Right to Repair initiative is real, but it is not a single day-one change across all member states. Directive (EU) 2024/1799 , adopted on June 13, 2024 and in force since July 30, 2024, sets a framework intended to make repair a more practical alternative to replacement for covered consumer goods. Its most consequential obligations will take effect through national implementation, with member states required to transpose the directive by July 31, 2026 . For consumers, t...

HoloMobile Devlog #1: Die Reise von der ersten Idee zum Code

Hallo zusammen! D...

I found a duplicate-charge bug in an MCP tool via static analysis — here's the finding and the fix (NEXUM-004)

A duplicate-charge bug in an MCP tool, found by static analysis before it shipped A few weeks ago I ran a small side project of mine — Nexum , a deterministic static scanner for OpenAPI/MCP specs — against a public MCP server: adotob-mcp by Fabian Williams . It flagged something real. The finding The purchase_free_bundle tool had no idempotency protection. In plain terms: nothing in the spec stopped the same call from executing twice. For a human-driven API, tha...

How to Design a Scalable Web Application Architecture for 10x Traffic Without 10x Cloud Costs

Cloud spending is becoming the architecture problem nobody can hide anymore. In August 2026, Amazon raised its annual infrastructure spending plan to roughly $220 billion, while industry capacity remains constrained by AI demand, power, and data-center availability. The controversial part? Most startups do not have a cloud-pricing problem. They have a software-design problem. Throwing more instances at traffic is easy; making every extra request materially cheaper is harder. A scalable ...

A missing ORDER BY cost us Thousands in API calls

In 2022, I fixed one of the most expensive one-line bugs we've shipped. The fix was this: - Area.all() + Area.query().orderBy('id') That's it. A missing SQL ORDER BY was causing identical requests to generate different Redis cache keys. The application worked. Redis worked. MySQL worked. But our Google Maps API bill had climbed to around €3,500 per year. The context I'm the co-founder and CTO of MyCater , a B2B catering marketplace. One of the t...
