Show HN: Quasicrystals Animation Playground with WebXR

Hi! This is my little project introducing quasicrystals animations with some parameters. It uses a custom shader to allow higher resolution. Not all combinations look equally good. For example the "Spectrum" color palette IMO makes sense only for low values of "Tempo" and "Pattern Density". If you have VR googles, I recommend trying the WebXR version - it's really nice. When housing is unaffordable, this artist’s device makes pedaling harder

Justin Blinder had just been laid off when he first came up with the idea for Ground Truth. It was 2020, two weeks before covid lockdown went into effect, and the Brooklyn-based artist and technologist had no idea what the future would hold. He started working for the food delivery apps, and as he was […]

I scanned the code of 25 MCP servers — what they can do to your machine before you sandbox them

An MCP server isn't a remote API you call over HTTPS. For the stdio servers that make up most of the popular ones, npx some-mcp-server downloads code and runs it as a local process — with your shell's environment, your filesystem, and your network. Your agent then hands that process instructions. That's a normal, useful design. It's also a capability surface nobody itemizes for you. So I measured it. Method (static source scan — honest about its limits) I pulled 25 popular...

I built an image vectorizer that grades its own homework — and it kept catching me lying

Every image-to-SVG converter I've ever used makes the same promise on its landing page: 100% accuracy . None of them can define what that means, let alone measure it. So I built one that does. It's called Vecline , it's free, MIT, and runs entirely in your browser. But the interesting part isn't the tracer. It's what happens when a tool measures its own output instead of asserting it's good — because the measurements kept disagreeing with the things I'd written in my own README, and I had t...

Building the flagship (1): browser-correct cookie auth in Fitz

TL;DR — Fitz has @auth_provider / @authenticated for Bearer-token APIs, but a browser admin panel needs something different: the browser can't send an Authorization header on a page navigation or a WebSocket handshake, and an unauthenticated request should redirect to /login , not return a JSON 401. So the flagship Admin app uses a session cookie : login verifies the password with Argon2id , signs a JWT , and puts it in an HttpOnly cookie; every protected page reads the cookie,...

What I Learned About Exceptions in C#: Understanding Errors Instead of Hiding Them

When I started learning C#, I thought exceptions were mainly about one thing: Put the code inside try , catch the exception, and the problem is solved. But as I worked more with .NET and started building APIs, I realized that handling an exception is not the same as hiding it . This article is about what I learned while trying to understand exceptions in C# and how my way of thinking about errors changed. What is an Exception? An exception is an unexpected situa...

Learning Elixir: Alias, Import, Require and Use

I like to think of the four tools in this article — alias , import , require , and use — as four different ways to reach into another drawer of the toolbox. In the previous articles I organized my functions into drawers and stuck notes on them. Now I need to use tools from other drawers, and each of these four keywords reaches across in its own way. alias is like writing a short nickname on a drawer label so I can point to it quickly. import is like laying the tools I need out on my own...

Katalon Studio has no native Allure adapter. Here's how to get one anyway.

JUnit has an official Allure adapter. TestNG has one. Cucumber has one. Katalon Studio does not, even though it's one of the most widely used test automation platforms out there. Allure-Katalon Bridge fixes that. It turns any Katalon Studio project into an Allure-reporting project by copying a handful of files into it. No plugin installation, no OSGi packaging, no command line required, and no changes to your existing Test Cases or Test Suites. GitHub: https://github.com/montbaga...

Building Arogya Seva: How I Built an Ultra-Low Latency Telehealth Voice AI for Bharat in 10 Days

Introduction: The Problem & The Mission Across rural and semi-urban India, access to timely healthcare advice is hindered by high patient-to-doctor ratios, geographical distances, and language barriers. Millions of citizens delay seeking medical advice simply because scheduling a clinic visit or understanding preliminary symptom urgency is daunting. Arogya Seva was created to bridge this gap as part of the #VoiceForBharat challenge (Track: Health Access). It is an empathetic, multilingu...

Self-attention, explained without the heavy math

Every large language model, image generator, and modern recommender shares one idea at its core: self-attention. Strip away the math and it's surprisingly intuitive. The 2017 paper that introduced it was titled "Attention Is All You Need," and a decade of AI has more or less proven the claim. But most explanations drown the intuition in linear algebra. Let me give you the mental model first; the equations make sense only after. The problem attention solves Read this sentence:...

Why You Need to Ditch Sherlock and Holehe for This 2-in-1 OSINT Suite—user-scanner

If you've spent any time doing digital footprinting or target enumeration, your workflow probably looks like this: Fire up Sherlock to see where a handle exists across social media. Realize Sherlock doesn't extract metadata or verify email registrations. Switch over to Holehe to run an email check against recovery endpoints. Manually copy-paste discovered handles or links into a second search. Deal with endless rate limits, missing profile photos, and outdated modules. It's...

Install Hadoop on WSL2 Ubuntu (2026): Complete Step-by-Step Guide

If you've searched "install Hadoop on WSL," you've probably found guides from 2020–2023, most written for WSL1 or old Hadoop 3.2/3.3.0 builds. This guide is different: it's WSL2-specific, uses the current Hadoop 3.5.x line, and includes the exact errors WSL throws that generic Linux guides don't warn you about — SSH not starting, slow HDFS I/O on the Windows filesystem, and JAVA_HOME issues. What you need before starting Windows 10 (build 19041+) or Windows 11 WSL2 enabled wi...

Microsoft Foundry Agent Permission Governance: OBO, RBAC, and Approval Boundaries

The previous article, Microsoft Foundry Agent Identity Governance: Agent Identities, Blueprints, and Managed Identities mapped the relationships among User Identity, Agent Identity, Agent Identity Blueprint, and Project Managed Identity. This article turns that identity model into a permission ledger, a publish-time migration plan, and a set of negative tests. It uses one scenario to answer three practical questions: When should an agent use On-Behalf-Of (OBO), and when should it use Ag...

FetchAI - Quantum Dog Breed Scanner & Story Generator

## What I Built I built FetchAI , an intelligent, cyberpunk-styled dark mode web application that acts as a quantum dog breed scanner and an AI story generator. When a user uploads a portrait of their dog, the application connects directly to the Google AI matrix using the latest Gemini API ( gemini-2.0-flash ). It instantly extracts the exact breed classification, creates a behavioral profile, provides care metrics, and writes a beautiful, unique 3-sentence short story featuring the dog ...

How I'm Building Reproducible Agentic Tests for AI Girlfriend Apps

AI companion and AI girlfriend apps are a useful stress test for a problem that affects many stateful AI products: the claims users care about are easy to market and surprisingly hard to verify. "Long-term memory" can mean remembering a name ten messages later, retaining a fact across sessions, or keeping dozens of facts straight after the conversation has accumulated noise. "Consistent characters" can mean tone, biography, appearance, or all three. A single successful image says almost nothi...

MCP Just Got a Native App Platform — Its Default CSP Blocks Everything

MCP Just Got a Native App Platform — Its Default CSP Blocks Everything MCP Apps is the first official extension folded directly into the Model Context Protocol's stable core spec: a tool can now declare an interactive HTML UI — a ui:// resource — that a host renders in a sandboxed iframe instead of just dumping text back to the model. Think a dashboard, a form, a live chart, embedded right in the conversation. It's a genuinely useful capability, and it's also brand new enough that almost n...

[Bug Smash] The Amnesiac ORAM: Fixing Oblivious RAM That Forgot Everything

This is a submission for DEV's Summer Bug Smash: Clear the Lineup powered by Sentry . Project Overview I've been working on Styx OS — a custom x86-64 microkernel I'm building completely from scratch. It handles everything from the bootloader up through a capability-based userspace. The whole philosophy behind Styx OS is that you shouldn't even trust your own hardware. So, it packs in features like FIDO2 pre-boot auth, TPM 2.0 attestation, and AES-256-XTS encrypted storage. ...
