Ask HN: How would you learn AI-assisted development from the ground up?

I'm a director/exec, not a software engineer. Background's mostly data analytics, SQL and Excel day to day, some R and PostgreSQL. Years ago I could hack together basic HTML/CSS/PHP too. Got into AI early and now use ChatGPT and Claude constantly. With their help I've built a handful of web apps, some Python scripts and desktop tools, and an Android app on Supabase with real multiple users. So I can build things. But I'm very aware there are big holes underneath it. I can usually get something w...

Show HN: Phixo – AI Phishing Protection for Gmail and Outlook

Hi, I am a Solo developer and I have created a Chrome extension to help prevent email phishing in Gmail and Outlook. This extension tells you why an email has phishing signs and also blocks the phishing URL if it finds something suspicious. I am posting here to get feedback so I can improve my extension further. Although it's still in the early stages, I am improving it with time. If you guys could check it and give me any feedback, that would be very helpful for me. Anything good or bad is welc...

Show HN: Sitrep - AI Copilot For Incidents

Hi HN! I made Sitrep, which is an AI incident copilot that sites alongside you during incidents and watches your screen. You can chat with it, and ask questions ("what was that trace I saw?") and it uses vision to answer your questions, providing evidence. It can also integrate with existing observability tools too, I've added Grafana as an example. This means the agent can not only reference context from vision, but also verify context by using actual logs/traces. To avoid duplicate frames, it ...

Ask/Tell HN: use the flag button instead of complaining about AI slop articles

There is an article sitting at 60+ points now at the homepage which is clearly written by an AI and most comments saying something along the lines "this article is clearly AI slop". In this particular case, the article seems to be real AI slop: it creates a nonsensical benchmark to compare two tools and uses that to plug the company's product. The people commenting are right to point it out. The problem with the repeated complaining about AI slop is that it makes browsing HN tiring for two rea...

~1,400 years ago, scholars built a rigorous system to verify who you can trust. I rebuilt it as a trust layer for AI agents.

I wrote this and just put it on arXiv, sharing for the discussion. When statements spread through long chains of people — some reliable, some not — you can't trust a claim just because it sounds right. Islamic scholars faced this centuries ago and built one of history's most rigorous systems for verifying transmitted knowledge: every claim carries its full chain of transmitters (isnād), every transmitter is graded on integrity and precision (rijāl), the chain is only as strong as its weakest l...

How I made small local AI models stop breaking JSON - a grammar-based approach

I wrote a post about a specific problem with running AI agents on local models: they're unreliable with structured output. You ask for JSON, they mostly deliver, but then they forget a closing brace, invent a tool name, or add a paragraph of text after the JSON object. Hosted APIs like OpenAI handle this server-side. Locally, you're on your own. My approach: llama.cpp supports GBNF grammars that constrain which tokens the model can produce. I wrote a compiler that turns each tool's schema into...

Adam Mosseri (Head of Instagram) just admitted the hiring bar moved — and most people were never told

Adam Mosseri runs Instagram — 3B+ users, plus Threads. In a recent sit-down with Lenny Rachitsky, he said something that's quietly reshaping who gets hired. Engineering used to mean 40–60% of your time writing code. Not anymore. Mosseri's own team gave up requiring a full technical hiring loop — not because they lowered the bar, but because the bar moved somewhere else. He says it himself: "I am not a good engineer. I'm a mediocre engineer on a good day." That wou...

Trying to find the way

I think I’m close to my “this is the way” moment with local AI and agents. I’ve been learning a lot in my free time, but I’m not a developer by any means. Here’s where I’ve landed: Two machines. An always-on server (Ubuntu or Proxmox) an old gaming PC is great for this, and a portable daily driver for learning and building. Rent it or build it, whatever works financially. The stack. Docker, n8n for automation, GPUStack/vLLM for running models locally, Backrest for backups. The basics fo...

Scanned 5 DTC Brands in 50 Seconds. None of Them Are Ready for AI Shopping Agents.

We built a free, static-only scanner — 18 checks, no API calls, just HTML analysis. Then we pointed it at five brands that obsess over customer experience: Glossier, Allbirds, Gymshark, Drunk Elephant, and Brooklinen. https://preview.redd.it/jvc3yi9xt3gh1.png?width=907&format=png&auto=webp&s=6b3eec8215adceb05c557e3818b802e8fde8ef0c Every brand has clean structured data. Prices are server-rendered. No prompt injection. Robots.txt is open. The data layer works. But the mom...

ChatGPT doing bar work!

Had this response to a question on ChatGPT about ordering a drink near closing time: "As someone who has worked behind a bar, I'd have much preferred someone who came in at 10:50 for one pint, drank it and left on time, than a customer who'd been there since 7pm and was trying to squeeze in "just one more" after last orders."

Use the Codex safely?

Hi, I wanted to try Codex, but I'm worried about picking up something through it. I also read online that it takes screenshots of the screen and uploads them for analysis. I think that would be a bit annoying if, for example, I have my password manager open at the same time. Can I use Codex without any worries? Sorry if this is a silly question.

Functional branches not forming from conversations that have reached their limits

Can a Chinese Al give better China travel advice than GPT?

I got curious and gave GPT and HY3 the exact same prompt: plan a 3-day trip to Hangzhou. First impression? GPT is much easier to read. And both covered the basics like Alipay and DiDi, so I didn't think there was much difference. Then I sent both itineraries to a friend from mainland China. His first reply: "Grandma's Home? I'd skip His second: "The second one even warned you about the tea scam near West Lake. It knows too much." That's when things got interesting. It ma...
