One dangerous confusion in the AI era is to equate control over technology by a small number of institutions with human control over technology. The two sometimes coincide, and sometimes they do not. Model providers want systems they can monitor, constrain, and shut down. Users also need to know where their data resides, which tasks can continue running, and whether they can change tools.
