How disproportionate collapse, a design check from building codes, maps onto cascading failures: find the load path, size the tie, name the key element.
Essay #1 in a 4-part series that reflects on "Project Hail Mary" (the book and movie) and mines it for lessons on leadership, persistence, and teamwork.

“That product is off the market, so I think there’s absolutely lower risk for cyclospora in terms of eating lettuce,” one professor of food safety tells WIRED.
It looks like we'll be getting a successor to the Sonos Ace headphones sometime this fall, which was hinted at by CEO Tom Conrad during a third quarter earnings call. As reported by What Hi-Fi?, an FCC filing by Sonos, Inc reveals details about upcoming wireless headphones with the model number S52A. In addition to […]
Did a prototype Microsoft gamepad fall off the back of a truck? We can't say, but a Redditor has legit-looking photos of a prototype Xbox controller that's almost certainly the Xbox Elite Series 3. Incredibly, they claim they bought the pad for $200 on OfferUp. In May, a Brazilian regulator's leaked images revealed that Xbox […]
Testing your AI generated code like a human reviewer
The best test I know for agent written code: delete the implementation and see if the tests fail. If they still pass, they were never testing anything.
Agents love writing tests that only check the code runs and not that it is right. Add one rule to your rules file. Make every test prove a behavior, not an implementation detail.
That single rule has caught more broken agent code than anything else I have tried.
My site started returning HTTP 500 on every request today. Not a slow page, not one broken route. The entire app was down. Here's what it turned out to be and how I stopped it from happening again, in case it saves someone a bad afternoon.
The symptom
Every request returned a bare Internal Server Error . The app container was technically "online" in my host's dashboard, but nothing rendered. Checking the response headers confirmed the 500 was coming from my app, not the CDN or a...
You do not need a big AI setup to get value
The most useful AI workflow I have is one file. A short AGENTS.md contract that tells the agent how to behave in my repo.
No framework. No prompt library. No fine tuning. Just a list of rules the agent reads before it starts.
You would be surprised how much bad behavior disappears when the first thing your agent reads is a list of things you will not accept.
Short answer: it can tell you roughly where a network request came from, and that is frequently
not where the person is. Some tools present that guess as a city on a map. The honest description
is that you are looking at the location of a network, sometimes a data centre, and only sometimes a
human being.
Here is what actually arrives, and the four reasons the city on the map is unreliable.

The Quest Begins (The “Why”)
I still remember the first day I opened the legacy repo at my last job. The README was a single line: “Good luck.” Inside, a 5‑kiloline monster lived—a mix of PHP, JavaScript, and a sprinkle of bash that seemed to have been written during a caffeine‑fueled all‑nighter. Every time I tried to add a tiny feature, I felt like I was stepping on a landmine. Change one line, and somewhere else a silent bug would pop up, usually in a place I hadn’t touched in weeks.

The Silent Vibration of Guilt
It happened during a quiet afternoon lecture at the local community center. The room was silent, save for the hum of the air conditioner. Suddenly, my pocket erupted with a high-pitched notification sound—a reminder for a task I’d long since completed. Every head in the room turned toward me. I fumbled with the volume buttons, my face burning, feeling that specific, sharp embarrassment of being the person who disrupts a shared space. It wasn't just a nuisance; i...
Here's something that blew my mind recently: compression and language modeling are, at their core, trying to solve the exact same problem. Once you understand this connection, large language models stop feeling like magic and start feeling inevitable — like a mathematical truth that was always there, waiting to be scaled up.
The Compression-Prediction Equivalence
At its most fundamental level, compression is about finding patterns. If you can predict what comes next in a sequence...
Mistral AI has introduced regional inference endpoints for Europe and the United States, giving API customers a documented way to select where model inference is processed. The option is aimed at organisations balancing data residency requirements, regulatory obligations and application latency, but it is not a full regionalisation of every Mistral service.
The company’s regional inference documentation identifies two dedicated API base URLs: api.eu.mistral.ai for Europe and api.us.mi...
Mistral AI has outlined a Europe-centered infrastructure strategy built around regional inference control , open-model access and long-term compute capacity . The August 11, 2026 update introduces regional routing and a priority capacity tier, opens Mistral infrastructure to selected third-party open models, and establishes European Compute Units for organizations making multi-year capacity commitments. Together, the measures target enterprises and public institutions that need stronger contro...
I wanted a Kubernetes lab that would still be there the next morning.
A temporary cluster on my laptop would be useful for testing manifests, but it would disappear when I closed the lid. Amazon EKS would give me the managed AWS experience I eventually want to test, but keeping it online just so I could practise Deployments and Services did not make sense for me. The EKS control plane alone is currently priced at $0.10 per cluster-hour under standard support, before worker nodes, storage, and...

What I built
The Home Ratio is a landing-page experience for a simple idea: recipes record steps, but ratios can record people.
The page begins with one culturally specific dish—番茄炒蛋, tomato and egg—without declaring one definitive version. Its signature ratio dial moves between soft egg and bright tomato. As it moves, the ingredient composition, numeric ratio, emotional name, description,...
I started with a problem that no one could fix it for me - most of the times all of us do so. Heck it is hard, we work 7 days a week, 10+ hours per day and keep on going. We do pretty much everything: product development, marketing, sales, production, operations, book keeper, etc. We love it, we are passionate about it. We are in a rollercoaster, ups and downs everyday. I guess there are two states of mine: High emotions and low lows. Nothing in between, that is the life we chose. Questi...
i own a martial arts school and spent years watching students quietly disappear. nobody calls to cancel. a kid misses one class, then two, then just stops rebooking for next term and you're out months of tuition. by the time you notice the empty spot on the mat, they've mentally moved on. that drift is the whole business problem in my industry. about 75% of white belts never make it to blue belt, and most leave in the first 90 days. and here's the thing that finally got me building: a school w...
I was wondering if anyone has had a a pearx interview in the past and what the process was like? We have our first stage this friday so I was curious. This is our first interview as first time founders and we're in pre-seed phase. It's only 10 minutes and would appreciate any feedback from someone who had an interview in the past.
